Pea soup is something that wasn't really made while growing up, nor is it something that I've tried to make myself. Most of my recipes call for it to sit on the stove for several hours, which deters me from trying it for myself. One thing that I always think of (at least, since the movie came out) are the scenes from "The Rocket" where the English spectators are calling the Quebecois "pea soup". Pea soup was originally an easy everyday meal for the Voyageurs. It is now considered to be a simple peasant dish that most Quebecois would eat, and it became a derrogatory term that the English would use (and still do!). The title of this blog, by the by, is a line said by Irvin to Maurice Richard to get his attention and let him know that he's finally in the line-up to play.
The split-pea soup that I'm attempting this week is a slow-cooker recipe from Food Network Magazine. It's one that I've been wanting to attempt, but forgot about. It quite closely ressembles the Quebecois version, but uses a smoke turkey leg for the meat instead of ham (which I suspect we won't be able to find and just substitute for ham anyways). Hopefully it works out!
Here is the meal plan for the upcoming week; mostly Food Network recipes that I've made before. Enjoy the rest of the weekend and happy cooking all!
