This past Saturday, hubby and I trekked up to the Heights for Hats Off Day. We brought my FIL with us as well. This was the first Hats Off in a while where I wasn't going to be walking with the school marching band, but it was nice to be able to sit and enjoy the parade (and of course cheer on the band when they passed by; I was so happy that they played the NFL on Fox theme song). While watching the parade, hubby picked up the famed cinnamon sticks from The Valley Bakery for us. We discovered last year that you can actually buy the sticks right away, rather than later after the parade, so I made sure that hubby got some right off the bat. They were just as flaky and crispy as last year, and mine went quite well with my cafe mocha. :)
Once the parade ended, we joined the crowds in the street and picked up food from various vendors along the way. Hubby and I picked up lamb gyros from Sfinaki Greek Taverna. They hit the spot just right, and were very fresh as well. I then headed over to Glenburn Soda Fountain to pick up their strawberry lemonade. Yum! Hubby thought it was far too sweet, but I liked it. Good mix of strawberry with the slight tartness of lemonade. I also picked up a spring roll from the Thai Cafe (I'm pretty sure I've bought food from them before at previous Hats Off Days). They were quite hot and crisp, and very fresh.
As we were nearing the Show & Shine car display, I spotted one of my former students with her Krispy Kreme donut fundraiser. She had visited us on the strike line earlier in the week and mentioned that she would be at Hats Off doing a little fundraiser. I promised her that I would look out for her and buy a couple of donuts. She was selling the classic glazed ones, and my FIL had one as well. If there is one thing that Krispy Kreme does well, it's those original glazed donuts. Yum!
Our last stop ended up being at Chez Christophe for their yummy croissants. I had the double baked caramel pecan croissant, and hubby and my FIL had the double baked chocolate. Mine was still a little warm and tasted just as good as the ones that I had last year. Delish! We then slowly made our way back up the street to go home.
Here's the meal plan for the week. We experimented with a new recipe and a new piece of equipment for the BBQ on Sunday! The rest are oldies. Have a great evening and happy cooking all!
