Now that I'm a little more than halfway with nugget, there are definitely a few foods (and drinks!) that I'm really beginning to miss. There are a few things that I'm still eating, even though technically I'm not supposed to (my over-easy egg at IHOP on Saturday is one that comes to mind, Hollondaise sauce for eggs benny is another that I've been very careful to limit in consumption), but I went cold turkey with quite a few things. I've now reached a point where I've really begun to miss being able to eat without abandon. Here are a few things that I'm probably going to indulge in once nugget has arrived:
1. Hot dogs: Now, my one girlfriend told me that during her second pregnancy, she would have the occasional dog, but did it cold turkey for her first. Since most of the hot dogs that seem to entice me most are the ones that we don't make at home (which I suppose would be the better to have anyways if had one), I decided to just go whole hog with not having them at all.
2. Soft cheeses: I love, LOVE cheese. When I saw that soft cheeses were out of the question (blue cheese, goat cheese, brie, camembert, feta), my heart really broke. Now, like with the hot dogs, they are actually fine in moderation and if they have been pasteurized, so if a recipe calls for soft cheese, I just make sure to check that it has been pasteurized (which is the case anyways for stuff bought in major grocery stores). However, when we're in restaurants, who knows where it has come from. I'm just glad that I can continue to have cheddar and cream cheese, because I think I would be having lots of difficulty if I couldn't!
3. Sushi: God, I miss sushi. See, even though I can have my usual stuff (California rolls, sweet potato tempura rolls, avocado rolls), who knows how often the chef is changing his knife when slicing the various rolls? All it takes is for that little bit of raw fish or seafood, and that's it!
4. Wine: I've never really been much of an alcohol drinker, but since being with hubby, we always have a bottle every couple of weeks with dinner or whenever we're out at a restaurant. I don't really miss any other alcohol, just wine. Plus, there are a few dishes that I've been forced to modify because they use alcohol, and it is surprising how many dishes that I normally would cook that have alcohol in some capacity or another.
5. Rare or raw beef: I'm sorry, but there's a reason that I stopped having my meat cooked to medium well. It still tastes good, but not as good as when it's all seared on the outside and red on the inside. As for the raw stuff, beef carpaccio is the only thing that I'll consume that is basically raw.
6. Deli meats: I actually will still eat them, as long as they have been heated. But there are certain ones that really should be enjoyed as is, such as prosciutto or salami-type meats (basically stuff that you can on a charcuterie platter).
There are probably more that I'm missing, but these are probably the big ones right now. Hubby keeps joking that he knows what kind of meals we'll be having once nugget has arrived!
Here's the meal plan for the week. Mostly oldies, but goodies. The cheese soup didn't get made last week due to last minute dinner plans, so we're making it this week. Enjoy the week and happy cooking all!
