As I said, hubby and I spent Easter weekend at the third annual FanExpo: three days of geekery and fun! We ended up getting several fantastic prints in Artist's Alley (six from this artist, a few things from Rock, Paper, Cynic and three from this artist) shirts (hubby ended up with three new ones, all from Stylin' Online and I ended up with five; two from TeeTurtle and the other three from Stylin' Online), lots of comics, and several celebrity autographs. I think it's safe to say that this Expo was the best of the three so far. A million times better in terms of crowd/line management (which helped by being at the larger of the two convention centers). We went out for dinner at Mahony & Sons on Friday, and to American Cheesesteak Co on Saturday (along with our friends, who joined us for the geekery fun on Saturday).
I've only ever been to Mahony & Sons one other time, but hubby has been a few times with friends or co-workers (lucky thing has so many yummy lunch options nearby his workplace). It was surprisingly quiet for a Friday (but I guess it was a holiday Friday, so maybe that's why), so we were seated right away. Hubby kept raving about their lamb sandwich, but I wasn't feeling up to having such a heavy sandwich for our early dinner. I ended up ordering their grilled veggie baguette (truffled mushrooms, roasted red peppers, zucchini, cheddar & chipotle mayo) with a side of yam fries. When it arrived, I was shocked at how MASSIVE it was. They don't cheat you here, that's for sure!
For a veggie sandwich, it was very flavorful and filling. The red pepper was probably the more prominent flavor, and I'd get these hints of the other vegetables as I ate. The mayo gave it just enough heat and spice without overpowering the vegetables. Very yummy sandwich!
On Saturday, we met up with friends to enjoy the Expo, plus my girlfriend and I had a photo appointment with Eliza Dushku (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame) later in the evening. My friends suggested going to American Cheesesteak Co for dinner, as it is a favorite of theirs whenever they are downtown. I had heard of the place, and from what I'd heard, it is good food for good value. It was also featured on You Gotta Eat Here! on Food Network.
Their menu is pretty straight-forward: different variations on the Philly cheesesteak made with freshly shaved prime rib. I had the Big Shot, which had freshly shaved prime rib, sauteed forest mushrooms, crispy onions, truffle aioli and fontina cheese. Hubby just got an order of their onion rings. When hubby brought my sandwich, I was once again shocked by the size: it was so full to the gills with all the ingredients that I wasn't even sure that I'd be able to bite into it. It was DELISH, every bite was bursting with flavor and it stayed hot right to when I finished the last bite. Their onion rings were quite yummy as well, very crisp with not too much batter covering each ring. Methinks hubby and I will be trying to visit the place again (and again and again) in the future!
Here's the meal plan for the week. Not too much going on food-wise, but I am attempting one new recipe that I've been eyeing for a while. The pictures below are from the weeks of April 6-17th. Enjoy the rest of the weekend and happy cooking all!
