On Wednesday, hubby and I had lunch from Mom's Grilled Cheese Truck. The concept is pretty straight forward: grilled cheese sandwiches, just like mom used to make. The classic allows one to customize the two main aspects of the sandwich (bread and cheese) and you can also put in some add-ons as well. The breads are made fresh daily and you can choose from white, sour dough, multi-grain, marbled rye or even gluten free. For the cheese, you can choose from white, cheddar, Havarti, pepper jack, provolone, or Swiss. As for the add-ons, you can put in sliced tomato, extra cheese, bacon, red onion or sliced turkey breast. You can easily have a different sandwich every day of the week!
They also have daily specials, which are sandwiches that are only available on that particular day. The special on Wednesday is the Hot Angie, made with capicola, peppers and Havarti on sourdough. Personally, I'd like to go back on Monday for Mom's meatloaf (meatloaf with mozzarella and marinara sauce on French bread) or Friday for the La Di Da (prosciutto, rosemary infused honey and goat cheese on French bread). Now those are some fancy grilled cheese sandwiches!
Hubby had a late meeting, so I didn't get to line up until the height of the lunch rush (right at noon). The wait was probably only about 15-20 min, which considering that they are made fresh to order, not too bad at all. I ordered a classic made with marbled rye, Swiss cheese and sliced tomatoes and hubby had the special for the day, the Hot Angie. The sandwiches include potato chips and a pickle spear on the side. Once I received our sandwiches, I was impressed by how MASSIVE they were. Very thick slices of bread with so much melty cheesey goodness in between. My sandwich? SO good. The bread tasted incredibly fresh and was grilled to perfection. The cheese was completely melted and enveloped the tomato slices in my sandwich. Since hubby had a spicier sandwich, I didn't try to sneak a bite, but I did try some of the capicola bits that got left behind. Very yummy, but I could tell that eventually I would feel the burn, and would end up searching desperately for water.
I was also able to pass by Thierry, a chocolaterie pastry cafe. I heard about the cafe through one of my students, who worked at the cafe for a brief stint last year (my guess is for work experience requirements for graduation). The decor of the cafe is gorgeous: lots of dark wood and soft lighting. The cakes and pastries are right in front for all to see, and each is like a piece of art. The main thing that I had to try? Their macarons! They rotate through a variety of flavors each day, and it was hard to pick from the ones available. I picked up a trio of macarons (though it was very tempting to get the seven pack), and had them for dessert that night. SO MUCH LOVE! The macaron was delicately crisp on the outside and slightly chewy on the inside. The fillings were just divine, giving that bit of moisture to the macaron as a whole. I had the raspberry, Earl Grey and coconut macarons. Each of them burst with flavor. My favorite was probably the raspberry, which has the surprise of a whole raspberry hidden in the filling. YUM! I've decided that I'll have to get hubby to bring some home for me every now and then. :D
