This past Wednesday, we went to Street Food City, which is part of the Dine Out Festival this year. We couldn't participate in Dine Out this year, and since I'm on leave, it's easier for us to take part in some of the events that take place during the day. The trucks were all gathered by the art gallery, and there were about 20 (give or take) to choose from. Each food truck was offering a dish specially made for the event (but we didn't try any of the specialties).
Our first bite came from Vij's Railway Express. We've dined from this truck in the past, and their menu rotates through a variety of Indian dishes. We had the lamb samosas, which came with two different dipping sauces. The samosas were very fresh and crisp, but much smaller than expected for what was paid. I was hoping for more lamb in the samosa, but it was still quite tasty. As well as lamb, it was filled with chopped red pepper and chick peas. The sauces went quite well with the samosa, though the one sauce was MUCH spicier than I expected it to be.
Our next bite came from the Reef Runner, a food truck version of The Reef. I went to the restaurant YEARS ago when hubby was working at the Canadians ballpark, which was also before I became more adventurous with spicier foods. Hubby had the jerk chicken roti and I had the tobago chicken wrap. We also shared the plantain chips with jerk mayo dip. The plantain chips were very fresh and went very well with the jerk mayo dip, which wasn't too spicy. It was like chipotle mayo, with a little less heat. Hubby's jerk chicken roti was quite yummy; the chicken was swimming in sauce and the roti was light and fluffy. My Tobago wrap was made with curry lime marinated chicken, as well as lettuce, tomato and an avocado yogurt sauce. Not very Caribbean, I know, but it was still very good.
Next, we had a bourbon pecan creme brulee from J-Brulee. The owner had three different brulees: traditional vanilla bean, the bourbon pecan and a s'more version (the latter are both made with the traditional vanilla bean). He has the brulees all ready to go, and just has to torch the top (after adding sugar) and add the extra ingredients, if needed. The bourbon pecan came with candied pecans and bourbon whipped cream. It was DIVINE. The creme brulee itself is very well made; smooth and creamy with vanilla bean speckled throughout. The addition of the pecans and bourbon whipped cream just made each bite even better. Yum!
After having our brulee, I was needing a drink. I picked one up from The Juice Truck. I had the Strawberry Coconut (strawberry with coconut meat, coconut milk, banana, raw cacao nibs, raw vanilla and coconut nectar). It felt a little weird having a smoothie while wearing my gloves, but whatever...I LOVED the combination of the strawberry with the coconut. The smoothie itself was very thick, and thus quite filling as well.
Finally, our last bite came from Yolks, which we tried for the first time this past August. I wanted to get their beignets with salted caramel sauce. The best part about getting them today was that they were SUPER fresh with crisp outsides and fluffy, warm insides. The sauce was just as yummy as we remembered it. Overall, a very successful lunch at Street Food City!
